On Thursday 4 April, Claire Elß represented Cosmos for Humanity at the Zero Debris Future symposium at ESOC in Darmstadt, at the invitation of the European Space Agency (ESA).

As the only NGO working for the sustainable development of space activities present, we were delighted to be able to share our vision of including citizens in the preservation of the orbital environment.

What we remember:

👥 Including citizens :

There is still a long way to go, but we note that this vision is increasingly shared within the space community, particularly by manufacturers.

We have taken good note of the encouraging statements made by representatives of Safran - Space, Airbus Defence and Space and Thales Alenia Space on this point, emphasising that citizens must be informed and involved in this awareness.

Thank you to Piotr Sybilski for reminding us that behind public funding there are taxpayers 😉

European regulations:

Rodolphe Muñoz, from the European Commission, reminded us that the time to act is now: "We need laws" in the "Space New Commons". A vision of the space commons shared by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR).

🤜 Act now:

Several participants recalled that discussions on the subject had been going on for 15 years, without any international consensus having been reached. As Ernst K. Pfeiffer, if we don't act now, it's "Game Over". And as Lynn Zoenen pointed out, "we must invest in the sustainable development of space activities, not because there is a market, but because we have to".

For things to move forward, it is urgent that space policy choices are no longer just discussed in cenacles and ministries, but are henceforth the subject of a genuine public debate.

Public money = public debate.

Citizens are the new actors in space.

We would like to thank ESA Operations, Engineering & Space Safety for hosting and organising this symposium, and Quentin Verspieren for his work as a catalyst.

See you in Berlin on 06 June for the signing of the Charter!
